A Different {Sort of} Assignment

Yesterday afternoon I had an unusual (and dreaded) assignment: Christmas Card photo session.

Dum, da, da, dum. And yes, the Prez is doling out skittles in the following photo (more on that later).

I was not the only one dreading it. I base my feelings of dread on past experiences, people. Just eing real and honest here. Maybe some others in the family were dreading it for the same reason. I didn’t ask them their reasons, but I promised them a monetary payment for their time and a bonus for the child who behaved the best. I also had the Prez grab a bag of candy on his way home from work.

Yes, folks, I bribed my own children. It had to be done. I know, some may say this is ridiculous. They should do this (well all but the three-year-old right?) without being paid, and they should show respect and a willing attitude. I mean, the Prez didn’t require candy or bribing. Well … OK, nevermind that.

Learning On the Go!

Wow, it has been a busy month! Where did September go???

We are in Week 10 of school this week. That feels great to type that out! Overall, we’ve had a great start and now just 3 weeks shy of a third of our year complete … well, we’ve accomplished a lot I hope.

In this post, I thought I’d try to catch up on some photos and learning opportunities we experienced while on the go this past month.

First up, we have attended a few field trips with the tutorial we are attending. One was historical in scope, one was geared toward science and yet another a live performance on the stage.

Summer Snapshots

I have taken quite a few photos (mostly on the iPhone), but I don’t want to wait on posting or I know they will get buried on page 5 of my flickr photostream!

So, without further ado, some of our summer learning pursuits. Our local co-op has a saying: “The world is our classroom.” I think that just about sums these photos up!

Playing with an old friend!

The “Two” Rs {rest and relaxation}

20130621-230720.jpg

20130621-230754.jpg

OK, who am I kidding? Rest and relaxation doesn’t happen with six children, but a little time away was in order.

Actually it was planned months ago and these lakeside campsites are reserved months in advance.

All of us did enjoy escaping the boxes and building going on at our new house.

20130622-143805.jpg

We played in the sand, rode on Papa’s sea-doos, rode behind them on floats and kneeboards, fished every day multiple times, and ate way too much amid the good company of Grammy and Papa.

Li’l Bro and Li’l Miss learned to knee board on this trip. Big Bro Mo was a great teacher and so patient with them. He even trailed behind them on the board helping each one to get up the first time.

Another first: our fully certified boater took our little fishing boat out solo for the first time. We could see him from the bank, but all of us were proud.

He recently studied for and passed the state exam for Boater Safety Education License. You can do this once you reach age 12 and you must have this license to man a motor-operated watercraft if you are 14. If you are under 14, you must have an able adult on-board. Curly is 14, and according to the exam rep where he took the test, his 57 correct answers out of 60 possible was the highest she had ever seen.

And when we got home we found our stairs went all the way down to the basement! It is getting closer and closer to us being able to move furniture (and boys) into this space. Painting will commence later today with our two oldest learning to prep and paint alongside the Prez.

Momma’s Been Busy …

… with an idea that I would make gifts for all of our children. *And no, they won’t be reading this post!*

Two are done so far. Well one of these is part of a larger repurposed L -E-G-O table …

… that is not done yet. The table is actually my Mom and Dad’s VERY OLD bedside table. I think it is older than me, maybe? Anyway, my Mom, my sister and I are known for exchanging furniture, and we rarely get rid of things that are solid wood. Hard to find that these days, right? So, I told my Mom I needed a table and/or small cabinet. She said she couldn’t think of anything the right size she had hidden away, but she called me the same day and said, “I happened to talk to your sister, and she has something I think will work.” Sure enough, it will be perfect I think!

Oops, my Mom had a plant on it at one time that leaked. Oh well. I’m painting it (or rather the Prez is painting it) black like two other L.E.G.O. tables we already have. I’ll also be screwing one of these onto the top! I can’t wait to get this done and will be getting started on it this weekend. 🙂

The drawers will give Li’l Bro lots of space ALL HIS OWN for his little creations in progress, and the knobs will be getting a facelift. The Prez happened to find 6 knobs from a previous project we did–perfectly simple, round, nickel-colored knobs. So, this project will cost me a grand total of $15.99–the cost of the extra large baseplate. LOVE!

The book though … which will be wrapped up and hid inside it! … is done.

And I am fairly certain a certain little dude is going to have a BIG smile when he thumbs through it. Continue reading

Crazy Busy!

Who isn’t, right?

We took a little mini-vacation, which I need to post posted about. Y’all have to see the ride Momma rode for her boys! Oh.my.goodness. But that post is for another day. We ARE starting school on Monday, and Momma is still finishing up a few things.

Notebooks are looking good though as is the new printer I had to buy today. I asked each of the children to come up with a verse for themselves for this year. They printed them on paper that we slid in the clear covers on their color-coded notebooks. 😉

I helped Li’l Bro and Li’l Miss after they gave me key words. I then gave them a few choices to choose from, and I chose one for our baby girl. I had the idea today to put them on my notebook alongside the verse the Lord gave me for this year. I plan to pray them for our children each day, and this will serve as a great reminder to me.

This is the cover of Momma’s notebook.

I hope to catch up the blog on some fun family activities including our mini-vacation, Fourth of July festivities and a double-digit birthday as well!

Summer School

We have been trying to finish up some reading. I have come to the conclusion that one book will be shelved without finishing it. And that is OK! 🙂 Wow, that felt great!!!

In addition to reading and playing games more than usual (which is quite a lot anyway), we have been working on Bible Bee studying. This year, they changed it a bit according to my neighbor who got us into this! It is really tough, but definitely not wasted effort. I told our children they can spend their time on nothing more important this summer than Bible study and Scripture memorization. I am proud of their efforts and Curly is really giving it a go. He has already learned 10 of the 25 long passages. Larry and Mo are trying too, though they could put forth a bit more effort. 😉 EDITED TO ADD: We did NOT participate in the Bible Bee Challenge. It was way too much and it was just not organized well. Lesson learned, but again, not wasted effort as they were in the Word! Continue reading

More School Planning

Here and there I’m getting it done.
Like this morning. Was supposed to be at church for a very special service including a baptism.

Instead, I’m home with one little girl who is doing great (and was going to sit on my back for the baptism and then come back home with me), and another bigger girl, who woke up with a tummy ache in the night and got sick early this morning.

All in a day’s work for Momma, huh?!

So as some little girls were sleeping, I was planning some more. Here is my notebook complete with a one-page attendance sheet for the year from this site.
